There’s a new way for us to get to where want to go. A faster way. It’s by skipping the line. Ethically, of course. Skip the Line by James Altucher teaches us how to… well, skip the line. His main point is that people tend to be scared to “break formation” and try new things. Have you ever wanted to try something new or unconventional? Did you hear a voice in your head say, “You can’t do that!!” He says that we need to ignore that voice(whether internal or external) and do it anyway.
If you get 1% better each day, after 365 days you will be 3.65% better. Wait, that’s wrong. You’ll actually be 37.78 better! Check this out:
How sweet is this? The scary part is that you can also get 1% worse each day 😬 I thought we should talk about this idea because sometimes it’s hard when we look around and feel like we’re “behind.” Maybe we are. Who cares. What matters is that a seemingly small 1% improvement each day can lead us to the promised land.
Can you improve by 1% in multiple areas of life? Absolutely. Think about a 1% gain in health, wealth, love, and happiness? You’ll become some kind of super human after one year (haha)
“Alright, I like what I’m hearing so far… but how do I make something happen?” James calls this the 10,000 experiments method. I’m pretty sure he coined this and I’ve gotta say — I love it.
Side note, James is a corky guy and he looks like a mad scientist. I have the audio book. It is very entertaining to listen to him explain these concepts.
The 10,000 hour rule: You need to spend 10,000 hours doing something in order to become a master.
The 10,000 experiment rule: You perform 10,000 experiments to find something that works like crazy.
The difference here is that we're performing lots of scientific tests in order to find new ways to get what we want. It usually doesn't even take 10,000 experiments.
Just think about it. If we do 10k experiments on how to become fit, will we really not find the best method(for us) to become and stay fit?
This isn’t in the book or anything, but I think it paints the picture nicely.
Ok, enough reading. Let’s get out there and do something today!
I read one book every day. I carefully analyze it to extract the most helpful information. Then I pass it along to you :)
