In-N-Out Burger is one of the best burger joints in America. It might be THE best. In-N-Out is in its third generation of ownership. It’s a family owned business. It was founded in 1948 by Harry and Esther Snyder. After Harry passed away, Rich and Guy took over. They ran the operation independently at various times during 1976-1999. Eventually, Guy’s daughter (Lynsi) took over as president. That’s where we currently stand. There are two major takeaways from this book.

Extend Beyond Your Lifetime

Your impact might not be visible during your lifetime. It’s beautiful and it sucks at the same time. Accepting and understanding this concept can change the decisions we make. When we extend the horizon, we play a longer game. This leads to actions that drive massive results.

It’s hard to build something significant in one lifetime. But what about 3 or 4 lifetimes? How about 30 or 40? It’s hard thing to comprehend because we can’t see that far ahead. Creating something that can be passed from one generation to the next is a thought worth pursuing.

There might be some objections about if this is actually possible. For now, let's set those aside and think about what can happen if we extended our horizon.

Build a Megaphone

I love megaphones. They’re loud and they let you shout whatever you want. When you build something big, it turns into a platform for you to share what you believe it.

For the Snyder’s it’s Christianity. They put Bible verses on their cups and other materials that get passed out to their customers. The massive megaphone that In-N-Out is allows them to talk about what they believe in... And be heard. For Elon musk, it’s space and other cool inventions he creates.

The key takeaway is that when you build something big, it comes with perks. One perk is being able to say what you want and be heard loud and clear 📢
